Mike Watt & Richard Hell join forces this Sat at Bowery Poetry Club

Three Rooms Press is gearing up for history in the making as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the Minutemen's classic album "Double Nickels on the Dime" at Bowery Poetry Club Sat. July 25th at 7:30.

The event will commemorate the album with spoken word and musical versions of most of the 40+ songs on the double record. TRP's own Kat Georges will host the event, which will be a benefit for Doctors without Borders. The lineup includes Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, Richard Hell (godfather of punk), Michael T. Fournier (author of Double Nickels on the Dime (33-1/3 press), New Jersey experimental indie rock band Tweede Kamer, Minutemen tribute band Pillowman (from Worcester, MA), Maybe Partying Will Help (from Bethlehem, PA), mystery punkster The Bass Player from Hand Job, electro-poetic mistress Jackie Sheeler, Jazz piano cabaret duo Not King Cole & Kayo, and punkster poet Kat Georges (author of Punk Rock Journal).

Harold Norse Memorial Reading: Monday, July 20, Cornelia St. Cafe

A memorial reading and poets’ tribute will celebrate the life of writer Harold Norse (who died June 8, 2009), at 6 p.m., Monday, July 20 at Cornelia Street Café in Greenwich Village.

The reading is co-curated by poet and Beat scholars Valery Oisteanu and Kat Georges. The line up of scheduled readers is made up of Norse’s friends, colleagues and fans including: Ira Cohen, Max Blagg, Jeffrey Cyphers Wright, Steve Dalachinsky, Shelley Miller, Angelo Verga, Tom Walker, George Wallace and others.

Born 1916, in New York City, Norse earned degrees at Brooklyn College and NYU, before becoming--at age 22 in 1939--a member of W. H. Auden's inner circle. William Carlos Williams called him “the best poet of your generation.” Norse lived in the “Beat Hotel” in Paris, 1960-63, with William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso. There he wrote his experimental cut-up novel, Beat Hotel, now in its 30th printing. In 1974, City Lights published Norse’s Hotel Nirvana: Selected Poems, establishing him among the leading Beat poets.

He was nominated for the 1974 National Book Award. He was also recognized for his work "Memoirs of a Bastard Angel," which documents his relationships with W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, e.e. cummings, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, James Baldwin, Dylan Thomas, Burroughs, Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, Bukowski, Robert Graves, Anais Nin, Paul and Jane Bowles and many more. He continued to write until his death this month in San Francisco.

Graham Buchan graduated as a Chemical Engineer but has spent his working life in the film, video and television industries, including a substantial spell at ABC News' London bureau. His first poetry pamphlet, Airport Reading, was published in 2004 and his first full collection, There is Violence in these Vapours in 2007, both from the tall lighthouse (www.tall-lighthouse.co.uk). He was joint winner of Piccadilly Poets in 2001 and the Cellar Slam Champion in 2006. His poetry has appeared in two dozen magazines, one national newspaper and three anthologies, and he has also published travel writing, short stories, and poetry, film and art appreciation. Three Rooms Press and Cornelia Street Cafe present the weekly Son of a Pony Poetry Reading Series, named New York's best poetry series by countless people in the know.

This week we present the incredible performance poet, actor, photographer and jock Ronnie Norpel! with host Kat Georges. Doors open 5:45. Arrive early to sign up for the fantastic open reading before the feature.

Ronnie Norpel is a performance poet, actor, photographer and jock with a deep passion for the Phillies, where she spent seven seasons as a ballgirl and fan accommodation manager. In New York, “Ronnie G” was the muse and collaborator of Warhol Factory superstar Gerard Malanga, whose phot of Ronnie, “Marble of Light,” was included for the exhibition and catalogue, Artists of the Warhol Circle Then & Now. She studied acting in Hollywood and worked at the Zero One Gallery. Today, Ronnie reads monthly in NYC with the Upper Left Side Writers and Poets. Other readings include the Lower East Side Festival, the SynonymUS collective at Nuyorican Poets Café, and the Wild Angels at St. John the Divine.

TRP Shines at LES Arts Festival at Theater for the New City

Three Rooms Press personnel were hot and heavy with their participation in last weekend's Lower East Side Arts Festival at Theater for the New City.

Friday night, TRP premiered an excerpt of a new play by Peter Carlaftes "Sarah's Choice," which featured Kat Georges and Peter Carlaftes portraying the TWIN foetuses carried by the surrogate mother employed by Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. The play unveiled the decadence of modern American society with biting, twisted satire that had the TNC's Cabaret Theater audience howling. A special guest star, Parisian actor Christophe Touraud, made the play truly unforgettable to the packed house. Video can be viewed on this site or on YouTube by clicking here.


Saturday afternoon, the same duo--Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges--hit the outdoor stage on E. 10th Street to perform their mini-musical "Greenagers in Love." Crowd favorites included the title song, as well as "The Rotten Junkie Mommy" (sung to the tune of "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider") and "Smells Like Green Spirit" a hilarious take on Nirvana's big hit. And Sunday, TRP poets Karen Hildebrand, Ryan Buynak, Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges read at the smashingly successful Poetry Jam in the upstairs Cabaret Theater at TNC, hosted by the marvelous Lissa Moira. She masterfully navigated through a room full of NY's best poets, allowing over 30 to share their work.

All in all, a wonderful weekend at Theater for the New City, and all due to the visionary leadership of Crystal Fields, who developed the venue, and insists that the annual Lower East Side Arts Festival, with over 200 theatrical events, remain free.
