"Greenager a-glow-go" at St. John's Lower Manhattan Feb. 28 Noon

New York’s contemporary cutting-edge poets and playwrights join forces with St. John’s University student playwrights at “GREENAGER A-GLOW-GO!” The event runs Saturday, Feb. 28 at noon at St. John’s University downtown Manhattan campus’ Saval Auditorium. It kicks off Dr. Larry Myers international playwriting project.

The program will be hosted by “Greenagers” Kat Georges and Peter Carlaftes, co-founders of San Francisco’s Marilyn Monroe Memorial Theater. Their comic musical numbers will highlight the fun side of “going green.”

Also on the bill are as follows: Jackie Sheeler, creator of the blog “Get Angry With Me” who explores her personal green efforts; Angelo Verga, author of Praise for What Remains, examines the green side of finance; and Karen Hildebrand, author of One Foot Out the Door, who probes the green of envy. Undercover punk rock celebupoet Bass Player from ? offers musical interludes & excerpts from his book, Splitting Hairs. Performance poetry artists Madeline Artenberg, Ronnie Norpel, & Susan Scutti read their green-hued work. Also--JUST ADDED--Direct from Los Angeles!--the awesome performance poet Corrie Greathouse.

This event also puts St. John’s practicing playwrights in the center of New York’s poetry and playwriting scene. SJU playwrights include: Olivia Hartle, Kristopher Kaye, Caitlyn Mason, Taylor Pedane, Matthew Gray, Ben Less, James Losada, Maria Ruales, Mallory Soto, Feraz Khan and Anna Ilyadzhanova.

PLUS Lindsay Blodgett, Whitney Kimball Long, Brandon Medina, Lourdes Natalie Rose and Richard Wilt will perform a new work by award-winning Off-Broadway playwright Myers, exploring the personal face of today’s environmental movement.

All the jam-packed fun takes place on Saturday, February 28 at NOON in St. John’s University Saval Auditorium at 101 Murray Street (between Greenwich and West streets). Admission is pay-what-you can donation--no one turned away for lack of funds!

Primiere Poet Angelo Verga at Cornelia Street Friday, Feb. 20

Angelo Verga's new poetry book, "Praise for What Remains" (Three Rooms Press) is a real gem, one of those books you start and can't put down. It's unlike anything I've seen and I've been read it now about 10 times.

Angelo Verga has been very widely published in the Americas & Europe. His six collections of poems include 33 NYC Poems (Booklyn, 2005), and A Hurricane Is (Jane Street, 2003). Verga promotes poetry in public spaces, notably The Cornelia Street Cafe where he curates over 300 literary events per year. He lives & writes in a highrise above the western edge of Manhattan with the Statue of Liberty as his night light.

In the amazing "Praise for What Remains," Verga takes on the capitalistic greed that multiplied exponentially in the last decade, and the resultant financial mecca that is now in the process of imploding. His takes are alternately tender and merciless, tearing down every sacred cow with poetry that explodes off the page in its confident stance.

Be a part of the 2nd annual New York DaDa Poetry Salon Magazine, by submitting your DaDa-inspired poetry and/or art to Maintenant 3, inspired by DaDa instigator and Three Rooms Press spiritual advisor Arthur Cravan. We're looking for short DaDa-inspired poetry for this crazy 'zine or black and white art. The 'zine will only be distributed at the DaDa Poetry Salon on March 20th, 2009 at Cornelia Street Cafe (6-8 p.m.), and via mail to contributors. No online distribution!!

MONDAY, JAN. 26: The Green Scene Cabaret at Theater for the New City

A crazy event to support getting a green roof for Theater for the New City.

In the spirit of ecological responsibility, THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY has recently launched a campaign to turn its flat roof into a Green Roof with a Solar element, with the ultimate goal of supplementing our energy and greatly reducing its bills while sweetening the neighborhood air. The first of these events is The Green Scene Cabaret, hosted by playwrights Lissa Moira and Richard West (their musical, Who Murdered Love? opens at TNC in March).

Three Rooms Press' own PETER CARLAFTES and KAT GEORGES will be lending their talent to the cause in the debut of their new performance piece, "GreenAgers In Love." Very fun! Very funny! Two kids on a mission to save the world from itself. Hope to see you there.

It starts with a kiss. A touch. A dream. It becomes a lifelong search: to discover what love means on your own terms. In this piece, two women strip away the facade of the common definition of love bit by bit, in the search to discover, in their own poetic voices, if true love actually exists, or if the idea of love is what in itself fosters adultery, hate and war. Faced with increasingly greater demons, their sheer determination drives them to keep going, like two would-be brides engaged to a doggedly obscured reality.

Charles Bukowski Tribute Night: Friday, Jan. 2 at Cornelia St. Cafe

Burnt out like Norton? Perfect. Come to Cornelia St. Cafe for the first Son of a Pony reading of 2009, where we’re once again celebrating the life with a tribute reading to Charles Bukowski. Poet Charles Bukowski was truly one of the few and far between: a champion of the outsider, the lost and lonely, the outcasts from society. His work resonates well in the post-holiday drip that we feel each year, especially since his passing in 1994.

At this tribute reading, you are invited to drown your sorrows one last time before the resolutions really kick in, and read your favorite Bukowski poem, or an original poem that was inspired by Bukowski.

We’ll be showing videos of Bukowski, giving away books, photos and other prizes.

Plus a select number of readers including Peter Carlaftes, Angelo Verga, Ryan Buynak and Host Kat Georges will bring Bukowski poems to life in a very special performance right before your bleery eyes. Open reading sign up starts at 5:45. Get there early to get on the list or show up late and we'll find a way to squeeze you in.
