A Poetic Conversation with Daniel Simpson and Ona Gritz

Daniel Simpson, former church musician, computer programmer, and high school English teacher, currently serves as Access Technology Consultant to the Free Library of Philadelphia. He recently completed a volume of poetry entitled Inside the Invisible and is currently working on a memoir. In 2007, Dan and his brother Dave released Audio Chapbook, a CD of their poetry. His work has appeared, or is forthcoming, in The Cortland Review, Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review, Venues where he has read include The Free Library of Philadelphia, Philadelphia's First-Person Festival, WXPN World Café, and on WHYY's Radio Times with Marty Moss-Cowane. In 2003, he received a Fellowship in Literature from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Ona Gritz's poems appear in numerous online and print literary journals. Her poetry chapbook, Left Standing, was published by Finishing Line Press as part of their New Women's Voices series. In 2007, she won the Inglis House poetry contest, the Late Blooms Poetry Postcard competition, and was nominated for three Pushcart prizes. In 2009, she place second in Lilith Magazine's Charlotte Newberger Poetry Competition. Ona is also a children's author and columnist for the online journal, Literary Mama.

The featured readings follow the fabulous Son of a Pony open reading at the cafe. Poet/mistress of ceremonies Kat Georges hosts. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.; the open reading begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $7, which includes a free drink. Ever wondered what it takes to find a publisher for your poetry or novel? Thinking about self-publishing but not sure how to get started? Wondering how to publicize your book or get it sold on Amazon?

Come to Cornelia Street Cafe (29 Cornelia St., between W. 4th & Bleecker) this Wedensday, March 31 at 6 p.m., where members of independent publishing group GNYIPA (Greater New York Independent Publishers Association) will be showcasing their poetry plus sharing secrets of how to succeed at independent publishing. Tickets $12.

The evening features select poetry readings by Walter Holland (A Journal of the Plague Years: Poems 1979-1992 (Magic City Press, 1992) and Transatlantic (Painted Leaf Press, 2001)(, Pamela Sneed (Imagine Being More Afraid of Freedom Than Slavery (Henry Holt, 1998) and KONG And Other Works (Vintage Entity Press, 2009)), Jee Leong Koh (Payday Loans and Equal to the Earth (Bench Press)), novelist/poet Perry Brass (The Manly Art of Seduction (Belhue Press)), playwright/poet Kat Georges (Punk Rock Journal (Three Rooms Press)), Marni K. Connelly (reading poems of Francine Trevens (Echoes of Eternity (TnT Classic Books) and Jane Chambers (Warrior at Rest (TnT Classic Books)). The event will also include a photography exhibit by Heidi Russell.

Following the reading, publishers will be available for one-on-one discussions to share tips on publishing and self-publishing, and offer information about the GNYIPA organization. For more than 10 years, GNYIPA has served as an important resource for the city’s independent publishers, providing pointers on everything from book design and printing, to distribution and promotion, to digital book creation and licensing.

Featured guest poets will include DaDa superstars including boxer/poet Arthur Cravan and dada manifesto creator Tristan Tzara, brought back to life for this special event. The first 50 people will receive a free copy of the inaugural and only issue of Maintenant 4 (inspired by Arthur Cravan's 1915 Maintenant magazine, the first 'zine ever produced!). Included in the FREE zine is a special limited edition CD of contemporary Dada music and Wordscapes.

Three Rooms Press & Uphook Press at NYC Indie Book Fair March 6-7


Celebrate publishing's independent spirit with over 100 indie publishers from around the world, all under one roof, selling books you can't get at your big box bookstore. The 22nd Annual Indie and Small Press Book Fair is one of New York City's favorite annual literary events. It's free, open to all, and packed with an exciting line-up of public events.

Three Rooms Press will join Uphook Press this weekend at this year's book fair, Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7, 10-5 pm at the 20 W. 44th Street. Joe Bacal was Creative Director of Sunbow Entertainment for twenty years and in the early eighties, he was Head Writer of the Peabody Award winning TV series, The Great Space Coaster. At the same time, he was also Creative Director of the Griffin Bacal advertising agency. He has lectured on creativity at the Parsons School of Design and is co-author of the satirical book, How To Become A Legend In Your Own Lifetime––A New Concept in Self-Help. His poems have appeared in several literary journals, including Confrontation, Hanging Loose, Poetry NZ and Van Gogh’s Ear.
