Three Rooms Press presents a 101 Year celebration of Beat icon and postmodern trailblazer William S. Burroughs on Friday, February 6, at Cornelia Street Cafe.

The event will be highlighted by tribute readings and discussions by Burroughs associates and fans including internationally-acclaimed poet Anne Waldman; performance artist and playwright Penny Arcade; jazz poet and collagist Steve Dalachinsky; publisher, blogger and Burroughs historian Jan Herman; and poet Aimee Herman. 

Also on tap will be an audience group reading of an excerpt from Burroughs’ iconic masterpiece NAKED LUNCH. Three Rooms Press co-director Peter Carlaftes hosts.

Information on key performers: 

Anne Waldman is an internationally recognized and acclaimed poet, active member of the “Outrider” experimental poetry community, and writer, editor, teacher, performer, magpie scholar, infra-structure curator, and cultural/political activist. Her poetry is recognized in the lineage of Whitman and Ginsberg, and in the Beat, New York School, and Black Mountain trajectories of the New American Poetry. She is the author of more than 40 books, including the mini-classic Fast Speaking Woman, a collection of essays entitled Vow to Poetry and several selected poems editions including Helping the Dreamer, Kill or Cure and In the Room of Never Grieve. 

Penny Arcade is a performance artist, actress and playwright, best known for her show Bitch!Dyke!Faghag!Whore!  She has worked with numerous underground film and theater artists including John Vaccaro’s Playhouse of the Ridiculous, Jack Smith, Charles Ludlam, Quentin Crisp and Andy Warhol. She is a co-founder of the Lower East Side Biography Project, an oral history of New York’s Bohemian culture from the 50s to the present. 

Jan Herman is a blogger, historian, publisher, and author of numerous books including of A Talent for Trouble: The Life of Hollywood's Most Acclaimed Director, a biography of William Wyler; and Nelson Algren: Ticket to New Jersey. His blog, www.artsjournal.com covers arts, media and culture. He often writes articles discussing William Burroughs and Beat history. 

Steve Dalachinsky is a New York downtown poet and author of the PEN Award-winning book The Final Nite & Other Poems (2006). Dalachinsky's main influences are the Beats, Blake, The Odyssey, obsession, socio-political angst, human disappointment, music (especially Jazz), and visual art with leanings toward abstraction. His work, for the most part is spontaneous and leans towards transforming the image rather than merely describing it, in what he now refers to as transformative description/descriptive transformation. 

Aimee Herman is a poet and performance artist based in Brooklyn, NY looking to disembowel the architecture of gender and what it means to queer the body. Her work has been published in The Outrider Review, nin journal, Wild Gender, and more. She is the author of the full-length poetry collection, meant to wake up feeling (great weather for MEDIA).

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

RANDY CREDICO is an American political candidate, comedian, activist and the former Director of the William Moses Kunstler Fund for Racial Justice. He is the subject of the award-winning documentary 60 Spins Around the Sun, and is currently a candidate for governor of New York State. 

JONATHAN TASINI publishes the blog Working Life, one of the original blogs devoted solely to work and the economy. He has served as president of the National Writers Union for 13 years. His is the author of The Audacity of Greed: Free Markets, Corporate Thieves, and the Looting of America, and It’s Not Raining, We’re Being Peed On: The Scam of the Deficit Crisis.

JOHN McDONAGH is a comedic political activist and radio host and producer. He hosts the weekly WBAI show Radio Free Eireann, a program which covers the Irish freedom struggle from an Irish Republican point of view. From the front seat of his yellow cab, he has been driving New York City crazy for 30 years.

LYDIA CORTES is a Williamsburg born rican and author of two poetry collections, LUST FOR LUST and WHOSE PLACE. Her next collection will be called either Park Avenue, Brooklyn or Rice and Beans Sandwich.

QUINCY R. LEHR is a historian specializing in late nineteenth-to-early-twentieth-century social and political history, as well as a poet and critic. He has published widely in both prose and verse, and his most recent book, Heimat, is a long poem fusing his historical and literary concerns. He lives in Brooklyn and is the associate editor of The Raintown Review.

Code poetry performance is changing the landscape of the poetry scene! Code poetry -- poems written in computer code -- has found new resonance in a world increasing integrated with electronics.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, "Code poets find resonance between the constraints of programming and the traditional rules of peotry, where forms like the sonnet dictate strict rhyme schemes and syllable counts." Code poets are masters of both programming and poetry, and are compelling -- and daring -- visual and performance artists.

The First Annual NYC Code Poetry Performance Festival presents five top New York-based code poets, who will astound with their interpretations and breakthroughs transforming poetry as we know it. 1/3/2014: 7th Annual NYC Charles Bukowski Memorial Reading

Celebrate the start of the new year with the 7th annual Charles Bukowski Memorial Reading, Jan. 3, 2014, 6pm at Cornelia St. Cafe (29 Cornelia Street, between W. 4th and Bleecker in NYC).

Charles Bukowski was truly one of the few and far between: a champion of the outsider, the lost and lonely, the outcasts from society. His work resonates like none other, revealing the core of what it is to be human—sans electronics—counting on nothing, but ready to win, be it with horses, women or writing. 

The event, held on the first Friday of the new year since 2008, will feature performances of Bukowski poems and tales by a unique cast of hardcore fans including controversial monologist/actor Mike Daisey, playwrights Richard Vetere and Michael Puzzo, poets Angelo Verga and Puma Perl, plus Three Rooms Press co-directors Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges.

Readers will explore Bukowski’s works with respect to its place in contemporary culture. What would Buk think of ObamaCare? iPhones? Smart drugs? So much seems to have changed since his time—has it really? 

Rare videos of Bukowski, plus giveaways of Buk books, CDs, DVDs and other prizes will highlight the event. Doors open at 5:45. Admission is $12 which includes (naturally) a free drink! Mike Daisey is an American monologist, author, actor and raconteur best known for his extemporaneous monologues about Nikola Tesla, L. Ron Hubbard, Steve Jobs and Apple's supply chain in China, the Department of Homeland Security, the history of the New York transit system, 9/11, the inventor of the neutron bomb, Wal-Mart and a variety of other topics. He has recently been touring nationally with his new monologue, THE SECRET WAR about America's relationship with guns. 

Richard Vetere is an American playwright and screenwriter whose work has received international critical acclaim. His most recent work includes the play Last Day, and a novel, Baroque, about Caravaggio and the people he painted in Rome. His authored a recent poetry collection, The Other Colors in a Snow Storm. Movies include The Third Miracle, How to Go Out on a Date in Queens, and the cult classic, Vigilante. His highly-praised new novel, THE WRITERS AFTERLIFE, is due out in March 2014 on Three Rooms Press. 

Michael Puzzo is an American playwright and actor associated with the Labyrinth Theater Company. His new play, Spirits of Exit Eleven, set in a New Jersey strip club/pizza parlor on Halloween had its NYC premiere in 2013 and received high critical praise. He loves Bukowski! 

Peter Carlaftes is a New York-based screenwriter, playwright, actor, poet, and editor. He is the author of 12 plays, including a noir treatment of Knut Hamsun’s Hunger, and the celebrity rehab center spoof, Spin-Dry. He has appeared in numerous Off-Broadway productions, including his comic solo performance piece, Lenny Bruce: Dead & Well, as well as Barefoot in the Park and Stephen Adly Guirgis' Den of Thieves. As an author, Carlaftes has penned three books: A Year on Facebook (humor), Drunkyard Dog and I Fold With The Hand I Was Dealt (poetry) and Triumph for Rent (3 plays). He is a co-director of Three Rooms Press, and has served as editor for the annual Dada journal, Maintenant, the annual short story anthology, Have a NYC, and the recent photography and poetry book by punk rock bassist Mike Watt, On and Off Bass. 

Angelo Verga is a former postal worker, like Bukowski, and curator of the literary events at Cornelia Street Cafe, as well as a teacher, editor and poet. His work has been published in hundreds of journals, and his books include "A Hurricane Is," 3 Poets 4 Peace (Against The Tide, 2003), 33 New York City Poems (Booklyn, 2005) and Praise for What Remains (Three Rooms, 2009). 

Puma Perl is a poet, performance artist and curator, founder of DDAY Productions and author of several poetry collections including: Ruby True, Kunckle Tattoos and Belinda and Her Friends. She notes, "with Bukowski, you can open any book randomly and find a poem to read." 

Kat Georges is a New York-based poet, playwright, performer and designer. In New York since 2003, she has curated poetry readings, performed widely, and written and directed numerous Off-Broadway plays (including Jack Kerouac: Catholic by Larry Myers, and The Old In-and-Out, by Madeline Artenberg and Karen Hildebrand, as well as her own work SCUM: The Valerie Solanas Story, and Art Was Here, a play inspired by Dada predecessor Arthur Cravan). She is co-director of Three Rooms Press. Books include Slow Dance and 120 Beats a Minute, Punk Rock Journal and Our Lady of the Hunger.

Throughout history, people marked the event in many ways. Brady's 1813 Clavis Calendraria referred to the period as an evil time "the Sea boiled, the Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies." Back in Roman times, they used to sacrifice a brown dog to placate the anger of Sirius, The Dog Star, hoping to turn down the heat!

Thankfully, times have changed. A new tradition is being born this year, as Three Rooms Press celebrate the Dog Days of summer with stories and poems by and about pets.
Wait -- Pets write? You bet they do! Join us as we present stories by New York's finest dogs (and cats), read by their loving author friends.


Our featured lineup includes international best-selling novelist Jennifer Cody Epstein (The Gods of Heavenly Punishment, The Painter from Shanghai), Canadian horror fiction writer Susie Moloney (The Thirteen, A Dry Spell), award-winning playwright Cecilia Copeland (The Next Time, The Wicked Son), plus author and New York Times health and science writer Pam Belluck (Island Practice). We'll even have New York veterinarian and poetry lover Cary Nulton (MetVetNYC) on hand to discuss tips on how to help your pet stay healthy in the heat! An wild array of comics, dramatists and visual artists hit the stage as Three Rooms Press presents "Illegal Leaves of Grass: An exploration of grass-related ideas from Whitman to The War on Drugs" 

 Visual artists include DEAN HASPIEL (an Emmy-award winning animator, and creator of the Eisner Award-nominated Billy Dogma) and PETER SCHMIDEG (offering the world premiere of his animated Walt Whitman poem). Dramatists include JOHN FARRELL (founding member of NYC’s legendary Everyman Company and author/star of Off-Broadway show Walt Whitman: Time Traveler), along with PAUL DeRIENZO (detailing his "War Against the War on Drugs"). And wrapping up the show will be the hilarious sketch comedy duo BLEACH & BONG, along with stand-up comic, political activist and 2013 NYC mayoral candidate RANDY CREDICO.

NEW YORK—Modern day Dada poets, collagists, performers and artists are creating controversial and thrilling work that continues the spirit of the avant garde art movement sprung from disgust with World War I. Their work will be featured at 6th Annual NYC Dada Poetry and Performance Salon—and launch for Maintenant 7: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art—on Friday, March 15, 6 pm at Cornelia Street Cafe. Featured performers include visual/sound poet Jerome Rothenberg, Romanian Dada madman Valery Oisteanu, the maverick Duke of Dada Peter Carlaftes, vibrant DADAnewyork performance artists Lois Kagan Mingus and Robert Hieger, and surprise guests. The event is sponsored by Three Rooms Press.

The first 10 people will receive a free copy Maintenant 7 and all will be eligible to win Dada-related prizes including books, dvds, photographs and more.

Maintenant 7: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing & Art is the sixth edition of an annual collection of contemporary Dada work inspired by Dada instigator and Three Rooms Press spiritual advisor Arthur Cravan. Since 2008, the Three Rooms Press series has collected outsider art, poetry, mail art, collages and more from around the world. This year's issue, edited by Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges, features an essay about Marcel Duchamp's seminal work Fresh Widow by New York gallery owner Francis Naumann, poetry by American writers Gerard Malanga, Andy Clausen, Roger Conover, Charles Plymell, Mike Watt, W.K. Stratton and Jerome Rothenberg, and an expanded selection of work by leading European, Asian and Central American dadaists including Tomomi Adachi, Jaap Blonk, Lucille Calmel, Jelle Meander, Philip Meersman, Ulf Stolterfoht, J.L. Rodríguez Pittí and many more.  

The original Dada movement peaked from 1916-1922, primarily involved visual arts, literature—poetry, art manifestoes, art theory—theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated its anti-war politics through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. Its purpose was to ridicule what its participants considered to be the meaninglessness of the modern world. In addition to being anti-war, dada was also anti-bourgeois and anarchist in nature.

Beat-era original Hettie Jones faces off with Cintra Wilson ("the Dorothy Parker of the cyber age") to divulge radical ideas about love, sex, power, soul and eros with an eclectic line-up of women writers and performers as Three Rooms Press presents "Women in Love," Friday, February 1, 6 pm at Cornelia Street Cafe. The event features performances and readings by nine passionate, irreverent and intense women artists, burlesque dancers and cultural influencers.

The madcap mix of performers includes Cintra Wilson (Author, Caligula for President: Better American Living Through Tyranny; columnist for Salon.com and The New York Times); Rachel Chapple, Ph.D. (Writer, artist, designer, cultural anthropologist and founder of the online art and storytelling initiative real-stories-gallery.org); Alyssa Pinsker (Moth Storyteller, NBCC book critic, global correspondent for Huffington Post, stand up comic, teacher and writer); and Emily Linstrom (Fiction writer, burlesque bombshell, performance artist). 

Additional performers include Lily Scarborough Heehs (Writer, Spectacle, Tenuous Confessionalist, Poet, Fiction Writer, Bookslut, Nerdface); Amber Atiya (poet and performance artist); Sarah Herrington (big-apple farmer, dharma bum punk, author of Always Moving); and Diane O’Debra (Improv performer and poet). Celebrate the start of the new year with the 6th annual Charles Bukowski Memorial Reading, held on the first Friday of the new year since 2008 and start nursing that new year hangover.
The event will feature performance of Bukowski poems by a unique cast of hardcore fans including monologist/actor Mike Daisey, playwright Richard Vetere, actor/playwright Michael Puzzo, and Three Rooms Press founders Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges, along with poets Nicca Ray, Angelo Verga, Puma Perl, Thomas Fucaloro and George Wallace.
This year's reading will also launch THE MONTHLY at Cornelia Street Cafe, a new monthly reading series hosted by Three Rooms Press
Poet Charles Bukowski was truly one of the few and far between: a champion of the outsider, the lost and lonely, the outcasts from society. During this ongoing period of economic uncertainty and working class adversity, his work resonates like none other, stripping the human soul bare with humor, style and a bottle of beer. 
What would Bukowski think about the fiscal cliff? How would he feel about the demise of the US Post Office? Would Buk have a Twitter account? At this tribute reading, we’ll show videos of Bukowski, plus giving away Buk books, CDs, DVDs and other prizes.
