Los Angeles Premiere of SCUM: The Valerie Solanas Story April 29

The radical ideas of Valerie Solanas explode in “S.C.U.M.: The Valerie Solanas Story,” a play by Kat Georges, directed by Peter Carlaftes. The work will receive its Los Angeles premiere in a staged happening at Beyond Baroque in Venice on Sunday, April 29, 7pm. Tickets available at https://scum-LA-premiere.eventbrite.com.

Solanas, author of the notorious S.C.U.M Manifesto—which foreshadowed the #metoo movement 50 years ago—shot and seriously injured famed pop artist Andy Warhol on June 3, 1968. The play explores Solanas’ radical views through the lens of a Factory “happening” featuring a cast of “Superstars,” art critics, and outsiders. Furiously-paced and punctuated with slicing humor, whip dances, and anarchist ideals, “S.C.U.M.” cuts through façades to capture the spirit and value of artistic imagination.

A Three Rooms Press production, “S.C.U.M.: The Valerie Solanas Story,” is the opening play in Georges’ THREE SOMEBODIES: Plays About Notorious Dissidents (978-1-941110-54-6; Three Rooms Press; March 2018; $19.95), a trio of fascinating, cutting edge plays inspired by people who shook up the world—for better or worse. In addition to “S.C.U.M,” the collection includes “Art Was Here,” inspired by poet-pugilist and Dada precursor Arthur Cravan, and “Jack the Rapper,” a mash-up of Jack the Ripper and T. S. Eliot. Copies of the book will be available at the reading for purchase and signing.

Cast members include Bibiana Padilla Maltos as Valerie Solanas, as well as Linda J. Albertano, Dawn Walters, S.A. Griffin, and Christian Georgescu.

Three Rooms Press presents of evening of provocative theater, including the NYC premiere of ANTI, to celebrate the release of TEATROPHY: THREE MORE PLAYS ((Three Rooms Press Trade Paperback Original; February 24, 2015; ISBN: 978-1-941110-13-3, 138 pages; $15.00) the new book by Peter Carlaftes. 

Critically-acclaimed playwright and author Carlaftes explores themes of identity in crisis with taut language and challenging characters, often fraught with underlying tension and unexpected outcomes. TRP Shines at LES Arts Festival at Theater for the New City

Three Rooms Press personnel were hot and heavy with their participation in last weekend's Lower East Side Arts Festival at Theater for the New City.

Friday night, TRP premiered an excerpt of a new play by Peter Carlaftes "Sarah's Choice," which featured Kat Georges and Peter Carlaftes portraying the TWIN foetuses carried by the surrogate mother employed by Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. The play unveiled the decadence of modern American society with biting, twisted satire that had the TNC's Cabaret Theater audience howling. A special guest star, Parisian actor Christophe Touraud, made the play truly unforgettable to the packed house. Video can be viewed on this site or on YouTube by clicking here.


Saturday afternoon, the same duo--Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges--hit the outdoor stage on E. 10th Street to perform their mini-musical "Greenagers in Love." Crowd favorites included the title song, as well as "The Rotten Junkie Mommy" (sung to the tune of "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider") and "Smells Like Green Spirit" a hilarious take on Nirvana's big hit. And Sunday, TRP poets Karen Hildebrand, Ryan Buynak, Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges read at the smashingly successful Poetry Jam in the upstairs Cabaret Theater at TNC, hosted by the marvelous Lissa Moira. She masterfully navigated through a room full of NY's best poets, allowing over 30 to share their work.

All in all, a wonderful weekend at Theater for the New City, and all due to the visionary leadership of Crystal Fields, who developed the venue, and insists that the annual Lower East Side Arts Festival, with over 200 theatrical events, remain free.

March 21: Kat Georges to direct Larry Myers' new play "Twitter Theater" World Premiere

Award-winning Off-Broadway playwright Larry Myers’ new play, “Twitter Theater,” about the networking phenomenon Twitter, will preview in a special March 21 performance at 7 p.m., Saval Auditorium at 101 Murray Street. The play is part of Dr. Myers’ Theater Project at St. John’s University, and will be directed by Kat Georges.

Myers, Associate Professor, has recently sent the “Twitter Theater” script into cyberspace & already garnered advance reviews on blog sites of The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Retriever Weekly, CNET and more. His goal is to have an International Playwriting Center at the SJU Manhattan campus (across the street from the World Trade Center). This project is part of the strategy to involve St. John’s theater students in the production of professional theater in Manhattan giving them the chance to work with cutting edge professional directors, actors and theater technicians. Ms. Georges, now based in New York, was founder and artistic director of San Francisco’s Marilyn Monroe Memorial Theater for 10 years.

Called by the New York Daily News “one of Off-Broadway’s wittiest & more prolific playwrights,” Myers’ works have been seen in Rome, Italy at Teatro Olimpico & Scotland’s Edinburg Festival, as well Anchorage, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Louisville, & two summer long reps in San Francisco & Los Angeles. His work “Stephen Crane & Dangerous Women” was staged at the Crane Museum in Asbury Park, NJ & his “Past Life=Kerouac” was part of Lowell, Massachusetts’ Kerouac Festival. Myers’ plays have had two decades of New York productions both Downtown and Uptown.

Peter Carlaftes shines Off-Broadway

The play that TRP superstar Peter Carlaftes performed in last Saturday, "Ashtrays for Vodka," by David Sirk, was so well-received that audience members and the artistic director of the theater voted that it should continue to the "Wild Night" of the Strawberry One-Act Festival at the Off-Broadway theater company Riant Theater, providing another opportunity for the play to continue to the finals.

And, may we add, Carlaftes was definitely part of the reason for its success. His solid performance in the tough role of a bar buddy to a man ignoring his responsibilities gave the play an edge of authencity that made the heavy story line of the piece (ex-wife with breast cancer) easier to take, turning a melodramatic tear-jerk potential into a solid slice of life.

Congratulations to David Sirk, for creating a solid piece of work. And TRP wishes him best of luck in his future endeavors. No matter what happens in the theatrical world, credits and kudos count for a lot.
