Kick off your Labor Day Weekend like never before as Three Rooms Press presents "Fruits of Labor: A Labor Day Weekend Literary Feast of Labor Movements, Labor Pains and Labors of Love," the latest installment of The Monthly at Cornelia Street Cafe, Friday, August 30, 6pm. The event features a wide ranging group of literary artists and cultural icons, including New York Times best selling novelist Danielle Trussoni (Angelopolis, Angelology, Falling Through the Earth: A Memoir), poet/editor Laura McCullough (Rigger Death & Hoist Another, What Men Want), poet/essayist Tana Wojczuk (published in The New York Times, The Believer, Tin House), award-winning actor and movement choreographer Amanda Boekelheide, and cultural critic Ryan C. Daley. Additional special guest to be announced. Three Rooms Press co-directors Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges host. 

Featured guests will provce that L-A-B-O-R is NOT a four-letter word! Hot enough for ya? Duh! The Dog Days of Summer are here!

Throughout history, people marked the event in many ways. Brady's 1813 Clavis Calendraria referred to the period as an evil time "the Sea boiled, the Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies." Back in Roman times, they used to sacrifice a brown dog to placate the anger of Sirius, The Dog Star, hoping to turn down the heat!

Thankfully, times have changed. A new tradition is being born this year, as Three Rooms Press celebrate the Dog Days of summer with stories and poems by and about pets.
Wait -- Pets write? You bet they do! Join us as we present stories by New York's finest dogs (and cats), read by their loving author friends.


Our featured lineup includes international best-selling novelist Jennifer Cody Epstein (The Gods of Heavenly Punishment, The Painter from Shanghai), Canadian horror fiction writer Susie Moloney (The Thirteen, A Dry Spell), award-winning playwright Cecilia Copeland (The Next Time, The Wicked Son), plus author and New York Times health and science writer Pam Belluck (Island Practice). We'll even have New York veterinarian and poetry lover Cary Nulton (MetVetNYC) on hand to discuss tips on how to help your pet stay healthy in the heat! Three Rooms Press presents a rockin' celebration of 5 kickass NYC-based Independent Presses at "That's Independents!" the July 5 installation of the beloved literary series "The Monthly at Cornelia Street Cafe." Doors open 5:45 pm, showtime is 6 pm. Admission is $8, which includes a free drink. 

Each press will talk about their publishing ethos—and what sets them apart—then present work by some of their current authors. Presses include: The Unbearables (featuring Steve Dalachinsky, Bonny Finberg and Ron Kolm); In Stereo Press (featuring Aimee Herman, Megan Dibello, Daniel Dissinger and Sam Jablon); Kicks Book (featuring Miriam Linna, playing an old suitcase while reciting the raunchy early work of Harlan Ellison), Great Weather For Media (featuring Rick Mullin and Frank Simone), and Three Rooms Press (featuring Hala Alyan and Peter Carlaftes). The event will be hosted by Kat Georges.

The UNBEARABLES are a free-floating, in-your-face Autonomous Zone of Dadaists, Noir Humorists and Beer Mystics. They base their actions of the book, TAZ, by Hakim Bey; they liberated the Brooklyn Bridge every September 13th for many years, picketed the New Yorker magazine, decrying the shitty poetry therein, and occupied the New School where they gave a series of anti-seminars. Atrium, poems by Hala Alyan, wins 2013 Arab American Book Award for Poetry

Three Rooms Press is thrilled beyond belief to announce that the winner of the 2013 Arab American Book Award for poetry is Hala Alyan for her poetry collection Atrium (Three Rooms Press, 2012, ISBN 978-0-9835813-8-3).

 Established in 2006 by the Arab American National Museum, the Arab American Book Award honors significant literature by and about Arab Americans. It is the only literary competition of its type in the U.S. The Arab American Book Award was brought about by the Arab American National Museum and faculty members of the nearby University of Toledo. The winning titles are chosen by groups of selected readers including respected authors, university professors, artists and AANM staff.

The Awards are given during an invitation only event in the Fall of the award year. The AANM first gave these awards in 2007 for books published in 2006; for 2007, the number of submissions more than doubled from the inaugural year. "The Old In and Out," a new play by Madeline Artenberg and Karen Hildebrand, directed by Kat Georges, tells the stories of four free-spirited women who, while looking for love, discover their true independent selves. Not since "The Vagina Monologues" has live theater captured the voices of contemporary women with such honesty and compassion. Adult themes and language.

A portion of profits will be donated to V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls.

Get your DADA on as Three Rooms Press presents ¡DADA Land in LALA Land!, a wild ride of contemporary DaDa performance and poetry by leading maverick artists. The event includes the West Coast launch of the internationally-renowned Maintenant 7: Journal of Contemporary DaDa Writing and Art, which features more than 100 visual and literary works by artists and writers worldwide. The event takes place Saturday, June 29, 4-6 pm at Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center in Venice. Costumes encouraged. 

Featured performers include famed playwright-poet Doug Knott (Last of the Knotts), Mike Mollett and LA DADA (Carma Bums), Joanie Fritz Zosike (DADAnewyork), and Jeff Boynton and Mona Jean Cedar (Circuitry + Poetry). Additional performers include poet Marie Lecrivain, Bibiana Padilla Maltos and Christian Georgescu. The event will be hosted by Three Rooms Press co-directors and New York-based performance artists Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges. And -- JUST ADDED! -- performance poet extraordinaire Linda J. In addition, the event features the world premieres of Friends Scream for 2 Days (a mini DaDa Opera with music lyrics by Jan Michael Alejandro) and The Mirrored City (a DaDa ASL performance piece written by Jan Michael Alejandro, Jody Stevenson and Kalen Feeney, with ASL poetry by REZ). Both of these pieces will be performed by a cast of deaf actors, with ASL interpreters.
